Quebec Premier Wants All Economic Immigrants in the Province to Speak French by 2026

Quebec Premier François Legault recently announced that all immigrants who settle under the Canadian economic immigration programs in the francophone provinces need to speak French by 2026. Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) recently won the majority in the Quebec general election. In the campaigns, he voiced his concerns about immigration threatening the francophone culture of Quebec.

During a recent session of the National Assembly of Quebec, Legault suggested that one of his prime goals is to tackle the issue of the declining use of French in the francophone provinces.

The solution to this problem, according to Legault, is to increase the number of francophone immigrants. Legault’s aim is to have every economic immigrant in Canada speaking in French by 2026.

Whereas the previous governments led by Parti Québécois and Liberal Party accepted 50% of francophone economic immigrants, Legault has increased it to 80% and aims to make it 100%. Moreover, this step is also in relation to Montreal’s declining francophone population. However, how this goal of the federal government of Quebec will be operating in relation to the immigration goals of IRCC to tackle the labor shortage is yet to be decided by the authorities.
