Getting a student and permanent residence visa in the UK and the US has become quite tough for Indians off-late. But things seem to be undergoing a major change after a significant announcement made by Priti Patel, the British Indian home secretary in the UK. According to the latest announcement, the UK will now be following new immigration rules similar to that followed by New Zealand, Canada, and Australia which is based on points.
This immigration system award points for professions, specific skills, salaries, age profiles and qualifications and accordingly grant permanent residency to skilled workers.
New UK Immigration Rules To Help Indian Students
The new UK immigration system adopted by the UK will provide good education and work opportunities for students who want to study and settle in the Queen’s land. It will be exceptionally good for students who are ready to take up fields which are lacking skilled manpower and ensure faster jobs and better packages for them. So things are really looking up for the international students looking up for jobs and education opportunities in the UK.
But the same cannot be said about the current scenario in the US.
Students who complete their higher education in the US technically become eligible to get their non-immigrant H1B visa if they can get a job. But since it takes them around five years to almost a decade to get a green card for permanent residence, they are always in a dilemma and left in the lurch.
As compared to that students get permanent residence status in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand very quickly as the approval is based on the point-based system. That is why many students nowadays, get a permanent resident visa from Canada and continue to work in the US as a Canadian can easily stay in the US.
New UK Immigration Policy To Attract High-level Talent
According to experts, the new immigration rules that the UK is planning to adapt will surely attract skilled talent from India and China. The highlight is that the new system will not make any difference between non-EU and EU citizens thereby giving talented people across the world an equal opportunity to develop study and work in the UK.
With this new system, the country aims to attract creative talent, innovators, engineers, and scientists who can contribute to the advancement and progress of the UK. However, to qualify for the immigration visa, the applicants will have to fulfill the minimum salary threshold of Rs. 23.8 lakhs which could be a problem for Indian immigrants.
