The fact the news of violence that occurred against students from India studying in Australia is tarnishing Australia’s image has forced Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to speak up time and again that Australia is a safe place for students of foreign nations holding Australian student visas.
Rudd recently said that the Australian immigration authorities as well as the government of Australia takes the well-being of foreign students extremely seriously, and he also said that it is really unfortunate that not just in Australia, but in every city of this world, violent acts will always occur from time to time. Rudd however, did not played down the violence against Indian students, and quoted- “one act of violence is one too many; one death is one too many”.
Rudd was speaking all this on Monday while he was in Malaysia in between his visit to Europe. His reassuring statements about the safety of foreign students were extremely soothing to many people in Malaysia as more than 20,000 students from Malaysia are staying in Australia on Australian students visas at present.
Rudd also grabbed the opportunity to make immigrants feel important, by talking about the importance of immigration to the country. He also said that Australia is a country of immigrants. On a fine note, the prime minister also thanked the immigrants from Malaysia for providing some decent food to the Australians. He said that Australia is a multi-cultural society and the whole nation is proud of it.
