Healthcare and Canadian Immigrants
by Satarupa - May 22, 2012
The healthcare costs issue has raised many questions and many others have come up with complaints too.

While on the other hand much support the government’s decision as they feel that it is unfair for the Canadian citizens to pay for the immigrant’s healthcare when the immigrants have not contributed to the government tax much and they did not even live in the country for long.
Healthcare is very important when it comes to the elderly. As people grow up they need more medical assistance than what a young person might need. Therefore it is important for them to have a good healthcare plan in case of any mishap or emergency.
Canada has announced that all the immigrants will need to have a healthcare plan so that the government does not have to face the pressure of paying for the healthcare of these immigrants who cannot contribute much to the government’s funds.
These elderly people are weak and do not have the capability to work and pay the tax to the government. Therefore their children and grandchildren are supposed to get them a healthcare plan as a part of the visa agreement. If there is no such healthcare plan then they will not be able to get the visa. The healthcare costs of the immigrants went up to $ 3 billion and thus the government of Canada has taken this step. The reason why Canada has taken this initiative is listed as under:
The number of immigrants keeps increasing –
The number of immigrants that come to Canada keeps increasing every years and many of them are 65 and above. The flow of the immigrants has to be slowed in some way because the health care that these immigrants are receiving is from the money that the Canadian citizens pay as taxes. The debate is that why the immigrants should get benefit from the citizen’s taxes when the immigrants above 65 do not have the strength to work and pay taxes and who have not lived in the country for much. If they pay for these healthcare costs then the burden on the government is reduced and they can enjoy the benefit with their own family’s money without being criticized.
The healthcare will benefit the elderly –
The healthcare will benefit the elderly as they will have a solid proof that their healthcare costs have been paid and the process will be faster. The system would be slower if the healthcare cost had to come out of the government money. The government also has laid down healthcare plans for the immigrants which they can chose from and offer their parents and grandparents with a secure future in Canada. The immigrants have agreed to this proposal and they are willing to pay the government the amount to get their parents to come and visit them.
