Difficult for Immigrants to Settle in Australia due to Racism

 Australia is a land of people belonging to every corner of the world. It is the land of most diversified cultures. In the recent past the nation has been facing the issues of unsettlement for the immigrants.

By the end of 2009 about 23 incidents of “racial discrimination” were reported.  Australian Institute of Criminology, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Department of Immigration and Citizenship released a study entailing the attacks on international students. 

”According to a recent study about half of the Migrants in Australia could not get a job in their field of expertise. Most of them were from non-English speaking countries. “

Dr. Bob Birell, Monash University demographer says, “Australia’s intake of skilled migrants has doubled since 2011 to fill jobs in the fields like Accounting, Information Technology and health but the Skilled Migration Program is not achieving its aim and the visa system should change to address the problem.”

Chris Evans, Federal Immigration Minister rejects Dr.  Birell’s findings. He says more than 70% of skilled migrants are employed in their field and the Government is backing the existing program.

Dr Birrell says, “What has actually happened is that we have primarily recruited professional people with degree qualifications from non-English speaking background countries and only a small minority of these migrants have actually been able to obtain professional or managerial positions in Australia.”

He also adds that “There is certainly is a case to look critically at the various skilled programs to see if we could reduce them in order to diminish the burden of extra people that are currently going to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and adding to rental problems and adding to the demand for infrastructure and housing that is stretching Australian capacity in the construction industry”.

Craig James, a Senior Economist for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, permitting more number of immigrants to come and work in Australia would be vital in order to control the inflation. This means that more migrants are required in Australia.

 Migration to Australia has declined by 25% in the recent past, whereas the number of job opportunities has been increased over the time.

Some experts feel that immigrants are not able to get a job in Australia due to their inefficacy to speak in English. Also they feel that the indigenous people are brighter in many ways in compared to the non-indigenous ones.
