Some of the most talented punished by current immigration laws

At a time when the Obama administration is working towards a comprehensive immigration reform with the purpose of dealing with an estimated twelve million illegal immigrants living in the US, the DREAM ACT needs immediate attention.

As per the proposed law, high-achieving children of undocumented immigrants living in the United States will get an opportunity to live in the country and get admission in military school or college, pay in-state tuition and qualify for various kind of financial aid. It would give an opportunity to gain legal status to people who didn’t had any control as to where they should have been raised.

Many such people do not know how to speak their native language or write it, but still the immigration policy of the US requires them to be deported now. A large number of such students do not even know if they are undocumented and only come to know about their status when they are asked for verification of their immigration status while applying for college.

Almost five-hundred students of the same kind from all over the country went to Washington in order to show their support for the DREAM Act. With the purpose of pushing for this logical modification in the law, even faith leaders, labor unions, immigrant rights groups and business organizations have voiced their opinion together.

It is an irony that the Immigration Laws of the US would punish such talented people when they are actually looking for them. The most sensible step that can be taken now by the Congress is work towards the DREAM Act, without waiting for overhaul of immigration
