The Independent reports that the immigration minister of UK, Phil Woolas, is planning to toughen the points-based system and impose restrictions on skilled workers from foreign nations in order to protect jobs for British graduates.
Andrew Grice described in an interview with political sector, regarding tightening the criteria surrounding tier 1 and tier 5 of the points-based system. But according to some critics, the move might have unfavorable impact on the British economy.
Tim Finch, head of the Institute of Public Policy Research, the leading think-tank on migration matters in the UK, said that in the midst of controversies over European workers taking jobs in the UK, it must be acknowledged that it works both ways.
He said that if the nation takes excessively restrictive measures to stop other Europeans working here, then this would result in a tit for tat process, with British workers being pushed out of jobs in Europe. He added that all this will only make the impact of recession larger and would result in more job losses in the UK.
It has been revealed that since the beginning of the New Year, there has been a flow in overseas studies and work inquiries from undergraduates and graduates of UK and many of them were even thinking of moving to Canada.
In order to persuade overseas students and recent graduates to travel and work in Canada, the Canadian High Commission has relaxed the regulations regarding the open work authorization visa which are offered to international students on post-graduate work permit.
The rules are similar to the Youth Mobility Scheme in the UK and it allows students or recent graduates, aged between 18 to 30, to avail long working summers on the Canadian soil.
If graduates wish to take a gap year in the country, they are allowed to do so even if they have already availed a work visa during their studies. Still better is the fact that it is not restricted to any particular region or industry and once these graduates step into Canada, they can upgrade to the Canadian Experience Class visa, which is a route to acquiring permanent residency in Canada.
The application by international students for obtaining Canadian visa can be through the post-graduate work permit program, which states that it is very easy to find casual work in Canada and even study-related work can be found in Canada with just a bit more determination.
