New Australia visa restrictions for chefs could damage the catering industry.

After the introduction of a new strict English language test for overseas chefs coming to Australia, the restaurant industry is extremely concerned and many claim that they won’t be able to hire the required number of talented staffs.

As per the new rules which were introduced last week, International English Language Testing Level 5 would be required from immigrants coming to Australia in order to work as cooks, chefs and head chefs. According the migration agents, chefs who are already working in Australia will not be entertained if they are unable to meet the required language standards, which may result in many restaurants being closed.

Australian Immigration said that the main motive behind the introduction of these changes is to prevent the exploitation of immigrants with poor English.

Earlier, chefs weren’t required to have high levels of English proficiency and it is general feeling now that the changes will damage the catering industry.

One restaurant manager who is from India said that not a single chefs of his restaurant will be able to get through the level 5, which is now required for their Australian visas. He said that restaurants need people who work hard and have worked in busy restaurants in India, and not chefs with good office work record possessing excellent English skills without the required good skills.
